A little extra weight is a BIG problem!
As with all of us our animals need to be kept at a fit and trim weight to help reduce the concern over health issues. Animals like people have extra medical issues if teir weight is not properly maintained. The biggest problems we see are diabetes and joint injuries. These types of medical issues can usually be avoided by keeping your pet at a healthy weight.
Joint injuries and health issues can be especially costly to your pocket book. Arthritis in an overweight animal is much more detrimental and more difficult to deal with. The long term costs of medication to make them comfortable is very high as well. In the more active overweight dogs we will see injuries to the ligaments in the knee. This is something that will require surdery and will cost between $2000 and $4000.
We know and understand that weight loss is not always easy. The good news is that we now have a new medication to help with the weight loss. Slentrol was introduced to the market about 2 years ago and has been proven to be very safe and effective. Call us with any questions or to set up a consultation with one of our veterinarians.
The Changing Leaves
Fall is upon us with the changing weather and leaves. Remember to schedule annual exams as they are needed. They are very important for several reasons and keep your pets healthier longer. Pets age much faster than people, averaging about 7 years for every 1 calendar year. This means that if we see them once yearly, it’s similar to you seeing your doctor once every 7 years. By having your pet seen at least once a year, problems can be detected early and treated.
The holidays are coming up and there are some dangers to keep in mind. With Halloween so near we recommend that you start keeping an eye on your animals now. When the candy and goodies start rolling in beware that your dog doesn’t eat any. There can be several complications with the candy ranging from a simple upset stomach to intestinal blockage. The sugar will, at a minimum, probably cause some stomach/intestinal upset, but in the case of chocolate (especially dark chocolate) the reaction can be life-threatening. Please call us if your dog eats any chocolate to see if they need any treatment. Candy wrappers and packaging could possibly cause an intestinal blockage that will most likely result in surgery to remove the blockage. The best advice we can give is to avoid the whole thing and try to keep the candy and sweets away from our furry friends.
Another caution with Halloween is to make sure that your cats and dogs stay inside. It is difficult with the door opening and closing all night for trick or treaters, but there are unfortunately a lot of dangers outside on Halloween. The danger is much higher for cats than dogs, but it is very real for both. Please take care to keep your pets safe.
